With an expected crowd of 500 excited teenage girls, Darla has to worry only about a lone protester, who accuses Baylor of plagiarism, and a nutty letter from a fundamentalist, whose fellow church members may picket. When Baylor meets an unexpected end outside the shop, Darla and her tenant, ex-cop Jacqueline “Jake” Martelli, do a little investigating on their own, prompted by unusual and enigmatic clues provided by Hamlet. Those who like clever animals but draw the line at talking cats will feel right at home.

Trouble is, there's a pesky protestor on site, potential religious activists threatening to disrupt things, and a less-than-charming support team traveling with Valerie. Still, all is going well until Valerie steps outside for a smoke and her ultimate death. A hit-and-run case or an accident? Determined to get to the bottom of the incident, Darla helps hunky police detective Reese investigate. Naturally, Darla also learns to pay attention to Hamlet, her bookstore cat who points out clues. VERDICT You can't argue with the magical cats formula: Hamlet is a winner, and so is his owner. The literary references in this endearing debut will make readers smile, and the ensemble characters hold promise for fun titles to come. Brandon is the pen name of Diane A.S.
